Why Couldn’t Jesus Do Miracles in His Hometown?
In Mark 6:1-6, Jesus went with his disciples to His hometown of Nazareth. And on the Sabbath He began to teach in the synagogue.
Many who heard Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things? What is the wisdom given to Him? How are such mighty works done by His hands? Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary whose family we know?” And they took great offense at Him.
And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in His hometown and His own household.” And He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. He marveled because of their unbelief and went to teach in other villages.
Now, this part right here, where it says that He could do no mighty work there. This doesn’t mean Jesus was powerless because the people lacked faith. Obviously it doesn’t mean that because He did heal people. This also does not mean you must believe the Lord will do a mighty work for you to unleashing his blessings upon you.
Here’s what we’re meant to understand. Without faith in Christ, you will not be blessed to have the favor of God, nor be in fellowship with Him. No matter what Jesus did at Nazareth, they wouldn’t believe in Him. They’d known of His miracles. But only those who believe His words will be His disciples. So He healed a few on whom He had compassion, then He left and did not return.
If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:31-32)
Hebrews 11:6 says without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would draw near to Him must believe in Him, and that He and rewards those who earnestly seek Him,
…when we understand the text.
