Worship in Spirit & Truth

Worship in Spirit & TruthThroughout Israel’s long history, true worship was limited to the area of the tabernacle, which was later transformed to become the Jerusalem temple. But in John chapter four, Jesus says that “the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.” What are the implications of this statement, and are there any hints in the Old Testament that such a transition would take place? On this program, Shane Rosenthal discusses this with G.K. Beale, author of The Temple and the Church’s Mission.

Show Quote:

“What do you think Jesus means when he says in John 4:23 that ‘the hour is coming and is now here when true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth?’” –Shane Rosenthal

“I think what he means—many translations have a small ‘s’ in spirit. I think it should be a capital ‘S’. One of the promises of the end times was that God would pour out his Spirit on His people so that the worship takes place in Spirit and in truth.” –G. K. Beale

“Holy Spirit”

We believe and confess also that the Holy Spirit from eternity proceeds from the Father and the Son; and therefore neither is made, created, nor begotten, but only proceeds from both; who in order is the third person of the Holy Trinity; of one and the same essence, majesty, and glory with the Father and the Son; and therefore is the true and eternal God, as the Holy Scriptures teach us.
