I love Outback Steakhouse – their bloomin’ onion and butter topped filets!!  But what I really love is the atmosphere.  It’s as if you’ve opened the front door and walked right into a steakhouse in Australia… almost.

Corporate needs to have a chat with the Outback staff in Minnesota, because they snap me right out of Outback’s contrived reality.

Whenever I call ahead to see what the wait time is for a table, I get the pre-taped phone message with that “oh-so-authentic-accent-from-down-unda”… followed by the live voice in the native tongue of the great white north.

Where’s the authenticity?

Shouldn’t the staff be trained in “Australian English”?

It’s also difficult to offer authenticity at Chinese restaurants in Northern Minnesota.

I mean, the cooks may be from China, but I’m pretty sure everyone else hails from Duluth.  (Nice kimono, Helga… it looks stunning with your blonde braids!)
