Tim Hawkins is an incredibly gifted comedian, a great guy… and an amazing friend! (And, I’m not just saying that because he joins me on this week’s show.)
Lately, Tim and I have been talking about a show we’ve both been enjoying – The Crown, which is basically about Queen Elizabeth’s early reign and is quite compelling. Although, while it’s similar to Downton Abbey – but everyone gets along – the niceness of it makes us wonder just how historically accurate the show is.
And, speaking of Downton Abbey… as Tim puts it: it’s a show that grabs you by the throat, grabs you by the heart, and then just lets you go. It’s basically a soap opera with ugly people. Basically, if you watch Days of Our Lives and take away all the hair product, make up and pretty people… and you’ve got Downton Abbey.
But, what’s incredible is that when you watch interviews with the different actors from Downton… they’re all very attractive! The producers of the show actually take these pretty people and make them ugly for our viewing enjoyment!!
Maybe that’s part of my and Tim’s problem as stand up comics… we never wear make up. Who knows, if we cleaned up right, we could maybe be a solid C- in the looks department!
Tim’s latest project, Just About Enough, was shot over three nights and is a pure labor of love. Through the process, Tim and his team learned that it really takes at least three nights to take on such a project. The first night is just getting over the technical hurdles that interfere with the show. The second night usually goes smoothly – just as planned. And the third night… well, you never know what’s going to happen on the third night. You just want to make sure the cameras are rolling to capture whatever it is!
The DVD is choc-full of Tim’s hilarious music and one-of-a-kind comedy…and it even features Tim’s favorite cover art ever – his own high school senior portrait, complete with stenciled eyebrows, glasses, buck teeth and halo. It almost has a “Here lies Tim Hawkins” feel to it.
