Step 5—-Tracing the Symptoms and Wrongful Thinking
- The results of the extreme effects of being abused as a child.
We are looking at current behavior patterns, tracing them back to their origin, and to begin implementing practical steps to change.
Once you were violated every decision you make from that point on usually points back to some effect on what happened to you when your whole being was violated, spirit, soul and body.
Remember, we are spirit, we have a soul, which is our mind, will, and emotions, and we live in a body. Our spirit is alive unto God and we have a new heart the moment we receive Christ and His death, burial, and resurrection. We know we are heading to Heaven. Our hearts are pure before God because when He looks at us He sees Jesus and Jesus paid the price for our freedom in the here and now!!
Our souls however, have to be renewed to what God says about us, over what we have believed all of our lives from what happened to us and from what we heard. Old records are playing in our heads. How do we stop the record and start hearing God’s voice?
Quite often, from our childhood, we are taught something born out of someone else’s insecurity, prejudice, ignorance, or their own victimizations. What viewpoint have you found that you internalize that you need to unlearn?
Mistaken Thinking….Think about how mistaken thinking can interfere with the plan God has for you on this earth. Sometimes hearing something you do that you weren’t aware of helps you to make the change.
It is bringing dark parts of our soul to light.
Examples of mistaken thinking:
Complete a task at any cost.
I’m unworthy of love.
Don’t trust anyone.
I must overcompensate for my lack.
Don’t trust men.
Don’t trust women.
I need to look out for number 1.
God loves me only if I am productive.
I need to rescue people.
Good works will get me into heaven.
I shouldn’t.
I am an island.
I was born tired.
I can fix people.
I will get caught up on my to do list.
I can’t.
Manipulation works.
I can’t please God, no matter what.
My past will cripple my future.
I don’t fit.
Never give up control.
I’m a victim
People are cruel.
I’m a bad person.
Self esteem is based on good looks, riches, popularity, or power.
I’m not good enough.
The Bible is fiction.
I’m stupid.
There are no absolutes.
I am supposed to be perfect.
I am ugly.
I call it The Voice Everyone has “The Voice”. Psychologists have called it the internalized parent, or the inner critic. It is that record that plays in our heads telling us stuff that is not true, but because it is so familiar we believe what it is saying about ourselves. We sometimes perceive The Voice as the enemy of our souls attempting to keep us from moving into the plans God has for us because we believe what “The Voice” is telling us. It is interesting though, that our voices take on the familiar sound of our mothers, fathers, or others who influenced our life.
Once we recognize this voice as not our friend, we can begin to tell it to shut up, that it has no power over us anymore. We can change!!
Releasing yourself from the grip of the voice takes time and patience with yourself. You need to acknowledge The Voice for what it is. Ask Jesus to make you aware of when The Voice is speaking. You then begin to expose the lies The Voice is speaking and truth takes over. Call them out for what they are; lies!!
Remember the voice of Jesus always brings life and peace, not fear and dread, and He is not the author of confusion.
You will notice that when you start to get rid of The Voice’s accusations against you, where you were feeling defeated and dead inside, hope starts to emerge. Your energy will return and your passion for life. You will be out of the cage and the only voice you will heed is the Voice of your loving God who says that with Him ALL things are possible!!!
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21
This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live. Deut. 30:19
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2
How Jesus really sees you…
We are indelibly imprinted in His heart.
“Behold, I have indelibly imprinted (tattooed a picture of) you on the palm of each of My hands; your walls are continually before Me.” Isa. 49:16
The picture of us is not only on His wall, but ON HIS HANDS!!! We never leave His thoughts. We were made for relationship. He is the lover of my soul. He is the lover of your soul.
His love won me back from what the enemy thought was his best plan.
Our walls or boundaries we have up to stand against the enemy are continually before Him. We are not alone!! He stands with us.
