Unorthodox Representation
Off of the Monday conversation with Scott Farrell I have been thinking about “Why I Do – What I Do”.
As a young man I worked summers and weekends with my dads plumbing outfit and I picked up a term from one of the guys, the term was “You can’t see it from my house”. When I asked what he meant he explained that what ever he did wrong or left undone he could not see the problem from his house. I guess you could say this was his “out of sight and out of mind” mentality.
I said this to my dad once and he stopped me and corrected me. Telling me that the “You can’t see it from my house” mindset was lazy and unacceptable. Dad then told me that “Anything worth doing was worth doing right”. So with this mindset I started working hard on something’s but then completely avoiding other things because they weren’t worth doing.
After becoming a Christian I learned a bible verse that changed both mindsets and has been encouraging & convicting. It was the same verse that Scott shared as his favorite verse as well as his companies mission statement. The verse is…
Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
This verse tells us that no matter what we do we should do it all representing God. It doesn’t matter if we are doing small things or big things, at work or at home, no matter where we are whatever we do represents Jesus. That’s a pretty big challenge.
So off of this verse Let me ask two questions:
- Are we representing God in all we do? Are we showing our faith through our words, actions, and attitudes?
- Are we doing things that don’t represent God well? Are we involved with thoughts, actions or sins that completely contradict our claims of faith?
Small little verse of encouragement that can change the way we do what we do dramatically.
Are we living simply doing the least we possibly can because “You can’t see it from my house” or are we trying to do what we do the best we can because “What ever we do we do for God”?
