Known as the “Original Edu-Trainer,” Dr. Rick Chromey and his non-profit organization MANNA! provides non-profits, educational institutions, churches and other organizations with high-quality workshops, motivational messages, and consultations.
For over a three decades, Dr. Chromey has trained, keynoted, inspired and taught leaders to lead, teachers to teach and parents to parent. His speaking specialties include cultural and technological change, leadership development, creative communication and motivational theory. In this episode Tim & Rick tackle the topic of motivation. Specifically, how do we motivate people in our lives without bribing them? As a leader, teacher, parent, coach or employer how do you get people to do what you want them to do without dangling carrots? Are bribes effective forms of motivation? What and how do we do this better in all our relationships? Rick tackles a variety of angles on this topic and leaves us with an amazing set of tools to use to motivate people.

Instead of bribes, Rick recommends creating cultures of motivation with an easy acronym.

“FEED THE NEED” – The secret to fishing is the bait. An empty hook does nothing. It’s also important to know the fish and what they crave. Different fish bite different bait, lures, etc. Nevertheless, every living thing has a need to ingest and digest. For humans, our stomachs growl when we’re hungry. Inner hungers will drive a person to extreme solutions, extraordinary opportunities, and exhilarating experiences. What are those inner needs? What drives someone to bite? Our souls also growl like our stomachs.

G-R-O-W-L-S! If we feed these hungers we’ll need to do very little motivating additionally. They’ll rise to the culture!

Grace: our divine need. Unconditional, wholly unfair, extreme. Allows for mistakes, messes, etc.

Relationships: connection, shared experiences, intentional investment. Love is spelled T.I.M.E.

Ownership: sense of contribution & belonging to process. Empowerment not just tasks to do.

Worth: recognition or our value. Refuel love tanks with noticing, acknowledging, celebrating.

Laughter: have fun! Smiling/laughter taps deeper needs for fulfillment, increases learning.

Safety: security. Emotionally, physically, mentally, spiritually. Safe people/ places for authenticity. No fear of embarrassment, hurtful words/actions, or shaming attitudes.
