This week’s “Tool of the Week” in the ‘shed is Jeff Galley!.
Jeff is a father of three children, husband of an amazing wife Kristi and the author of Conversations: Turn Your Everyday Discussions Into Life-Giving Moments.
Jeff is on the leadership team at Life.Church and is the Central Group Leader overseeing the equipping and leadership development for their life groups.
Jeff’s book, Turn Your Everyday Discussions Into Life-Giving Moments, is an equipping tool that anyone can use to build relationships, become a better listener, and form stronger teams. In this episode, we asked Jeff about his personal journey and what life changing moments brought him to the realization that every conversation counts!
Jeff tells the story of how “question asking skills” allowed him to navigate a challenging time with his teenage daughter. Jeff, like many parents wants to dive in and fix problems with his kids. But, he took his own advice and helped her discern life decisions by asking her intentional questions and gave her the space to reflect and respond without making the decision for her. As he writes in his book,
“The sweet spot for powerful change is right in the center of where our experiences converge with relevant tools and meaningful conversations.”
We also discussed some key questions:
- What’s better, to give advice or ask intentional questions?
- What’s the most effective way to help others grow & change?
- As a parent, how can we help our children grow & mature?
This book encapsulates many of the motivations for producing this podcast. As Jeff writes,
“Good people developers also connect the people they’re helping with tools and resources.”
Some amazing tips and tools come out of our time with Jeff including these five principles of conversations:
- It’s not what you know. It’s what you ask.
- Buy-in is the game-changer.
- People don’t change until they decide to change.
- It’s always safe to assume you don’t fully understand.
- Just because it’s on your mind doesn’t mean you have to say it.
This episode is loaded with tools we hope equip you to build deeper relationships. Hope you enjoy!
