How Firm a Foundation!!!
You are in for a real treat, I do believe.
As you are about to hear in this week’s PODCAST, it’s one of the most basic principles of proper biblical interpretation, the ground rule of hermeneutics.
Ready? Here it is: “The Bible is the best commentary on itself.”
Ever heard that before? Well, you’re going to get a classic example of that rock-solid (pun intended) truism right now.
Let’s start with this: Peter, it seems, was obsessed with stones and rocks. And that for a very good reason.
Firstly, let’s once again look at 1 Peter 2:5-8,
5 And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. 6 As the Scriptures say,
“I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem,
chosen for great honor,
and anyone who trusts in him
will never be disgraced.”
7 Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him,
“The stone that the builders rejected
has now become the cornerstone.”
8 And,
“He is the stone that makes people stumble,
the rock that makes them fall.”
They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.
Now, remember that although Peter was born with the name Simon, Jesus gave him the nickname of Peter, meaning “stone”. When you receive something like that, along with plenty of teachings from the mouth of Jesus, Himself, regarding rocks and stones… it would make total sense that Peter would have rocks on his mind at all times.
One time is when he wrote this passage, which asks us:
How secure is your soul, presently and eternally? In other words, upon what foundation are you building your life, and how firm is that foundation? Another way to approach this is: What are the core values, beliefs, convictions, teachings, and worldview that currently define your life now and for all eternity?
