ABOUT THE HOST

REAL STUFF MY DAD SAYS
For years, my dad has been giving me advice on how to better myself, deal with “hard to deal with” people, and how to be honest in evaluating myself as well. Of course, this advice wasn’t always eagerly welcomed. I was a typical American teenager and young adult who would rather make my own mistakes than listen to my old man. But now that I’m older and seeing the wisdom of his “dad-isms”, I feel like my dad has been blessed with these pearls of fatherly wisdom that should be shared with people beyond our family and close friends.

When I look in the mirror, I simply see my dad’s kid, my kids’ dad and my wife’s husband. I’m a guy who’s made more than my fair share of mistakes, but for some ridiculous reason, God continues to want to love and use for His purposes. No matter where God seems to place me and my family, He has proven that if we continually seek what He wants, then we will continually be provided for beyond what we imagined!

Real Stuff My Dad Says podcasting topics include: equipping you with pearls of wisdom, encouraging you in your day-to-day life, teaching you about how to know God’s plan for your life, applying Christian biblical principles to your relationships, how to influence the culture through our personal conduct, and much more.

THE PODCAST
As the title suggests, this podcast is about real stuff that my dad says. Each week, my dad, Rod Drexler, and I will discuss these perspectives and truths, which typically stem from relating with one another and taking each other into consideration as God intends us to. As my dad lays out in episode 8, his life verse is Matthew 16:24, where Jesus says: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” This lifestyle of putting service to others and to God before your own selfish wants and desires has inspired many of his “Dadism’s” that we will discuss, such as “How Does A Selfish Person Know They’re Selfish?” or “Wives Complete Men”. These issues can have a profound effect on influencing our culture.
God’s number one priority is “relationships”: The holy relationship of the Trinity, the relationship between God and each of us, and the relationships between us and other people. Therefore, it’s critical that we look at what molds and guides our decisions and what influences the decisions of others before we make snap judgements on how to react and deal with one another. And often, the difficult part begins with that hard look in the mirror – particularly at the People, Places and Things that we chose to surround ourselves with (Real Stuff My Dad Says, episode 4). However, once the uncomfortable work is done, we can find ourselves living in peace with one another, with the many voices playing inside our own heads and with God Himself.

Over time, I will have other guests as well, including my incredibly wise father-in-law and other dads who have been gifted with cool, real stuff that will help us all live the way that God has in mind for us – “to do what is right, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God and with one another” (Micah 6:8).

Be sure to leave a comment or two about the podcast and your perspective. Also tell a friend or two about us. Meanwhile, as my kids always say, “I’m just trying to help.”

Real Stuff My Dad Says 51: Receiving Criticism

Dad and I are horrible golfers.  I mean terrible.  The words “stupendously dreadful” don’t come close to describing the damage we do to a golf course and a scorecard any given weekend.  Therefore, we’re taking lessons.  Each week, we place ourselves under the tutelage of our respected local golf pro. Now, you’d think that with […]

Real Stuff My Dad Says 50: C.S.I. Relationships

Just like a perpetrator in a crime scene, we leave our “finger prints” behind in nearly everything we do – including in our relationships. And, just as C.S.I. detectives attempt to deconstruct a situation and try to figure out, “How did we get here?”, we tend to do the same in our marriages, as parents, […]

Real Stuff My Dad Says 49: Safe Families

A word of warning:  when you become someone who gives of themselves, you will find opportunities to give to people who REALLY need it. My dad has raised me to be a man who puts other people’s needs before my own and to look for opportunities to help.  Now, this is easy to do when […]

Real Stuff My Dad Says 48: Givers and Takers

Dennis Prager has famously said that the world consists of only two races:  the decent and the indecent. But my dad has his own delineation between people – there are Givers and there are Takers. This doesn’t mean that if you simply accept a gift from someone, you’re a taker.  What it does mean is […]

Real Stuff My Dad Says 47: The Stubbed Toe Principle

As comedian Brian Regan put it, no one looks like a bigger idiot than the guy who suddenly walks into a spiderweb that he didn’t previously even know was there.  What was previously just a simple stroll along the sidewalk turns into maniacal flailings as he battles an invisible and unforeseen enemy! Or, consider your […]

Real Stuff My Dad Says 45: The Underwear Rule

According to my dad, once you see someone in their underwear, you begin to lose respect for them.  We see this in the context of professional sports – coaches “losing a grip on their team”; and in parenting – parents “losing a grip on their teens”.  But, what can you do when your words start […]
