ABOUT THE HOST

REAL STUFF MY DAD SAYS
For years, my dad has been giving me advice on how to better myself, deal with “hard to deal with” people, and how to be honest in evaluating myself as well. Of course, this advice wasn’t always eagerly welcomed. I was a typical American teenager and young adult who would rather make my own mistakes than listen to my old man. But now that I’m older and seeing the wisdom of his “dad-isms”, I feel like my dad has been blessed with these pearls of fatherly wisdom that should be shared with people beyond our family and close friends.

When I look in the mirror, I simply see my dad’s kid, my kids’ dad and my wife’s husband. I’m a guy who’s made more than my fair share of mistakes, but for some ridiculous reason, God continues to want to love and use for His purposes. No matter where God seems to place me and my family, He has proven that if we continually seek what He wants, then we will continually be provided for beyond what we imagined!

Real Stuff My Dad Says podcasting topics include: equipping you with pearls of wisdom, encouraging you in your day-to-day life, teaching you about how to know God’s plan for your life, applying Christian biblical principles to your relationships, how to influence the culture through our personal conduct, and much more.

THE PODCAST
As the title suggests, this podcast is about real stuff that my dad says. Each week, my dad, Rod Drexler, and I will discuss these perspectives and truths, which typically stem from relating with one another and taking each other into consideration as God intends us to. As my dad lays out in episode 8, his life verse is Matthew 16:24, where Jesus says: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” This lifestyle of putting service to others and to God before your own selfish wants and desires has inspired many of his “Dadism’s” that we will discuss, such as “How Does A Selfish Person Know They’re Selfish?” or “Wives Complete Men”. These issues can have a profound effect on influencing our culture.
God’s number one priority is “relationships”: The holy relationship of the Trinity, the relationship between God and each of us, and the relationships between us and other people. Therefore, it’s critical that we look at what molds and guides our decisions and what influences the decisions of others before we make snap judgements on how to react and deal with one another. And often, the difficult part begins with that hard look in the mirror – particularly at the People, Places and Things that we chose to surround ourselves with (Real Stuff My Dad Says, episode 4). However, once the uncomfortable work is done, we can find ourselves living in peace with one another, with the many voices playing inside our own heads and with God Himself.

Over time, I will have other guests as well, including my incredibly wise father-in-law and other dads who have been gifted with cool, real stuff that will help us all live the way that God has in mind for us – “to do what is right, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God and with one another” (Micah 6:8).

Be sure to leave a comment or two about the podcast and your perspective. Also tell a friend or two about us. Meanwhile, as my kids always say, “I’m just trying to help.”

Real Stuff My Dad Says 72: “Culture’s Ever-Changing Standards”

Between my baseball teams, my brother’s teams, and my dad’s softball teams, my family spent countless hours around the baseball diamond as I grew up. Real Stuff My Dad Says 71: The Grass Is Always Greener & He’s Got Marty Feldman Eyes

When I was a boy, my dad was constantly telling me “Son, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” As a young boy, stuck mowing the lawn on Saturday mornings, I never quite got what he meant by that. I mean, if the grass is greener over there, what does […]

Real Stuff My Dad Says 70: Think Before You Smoke… or Speak

For most people, their retirement date usually is preceded by some sort of countdown – perhaps five years or even six months. For my dad, though, he went on short-term disability for his back surgery, then while recovering from his surgery, his company offered him an early retirement package with a 21-day window to either […]

Real Stuff My Dad Says 69: Has Martin Luther King Jr.’s Dream Come True?

According to my dad, he’s really not that smart. In all actuality, truth is smart. So, when we acknowledge truth, then we understand a true, smart idea. Therefore, some of these ideas of dad’s that we have discussed in the past are not smart because they came from Dad’s noggin, but it’s the truth within […]

Back when I was a boy, there was a movement sweeping across the country, beginning here on the West Coast.  It was largely made up of a bunch of hippies who had found Jesus, thus earning the label Jesus Freaks.  It was basically a counterculture, hippie version of non-denominational Christianity, aka the Jesus Movement, where many […]

Real Stuff My Dad Says 65: The Groovy Old Days Weren’t So Groovy

As we get older, we tend to reminisce about the days of our youth, often to a fault. And, according to my boss, Joel Fieri, the Baby Boomers, in particular, are too often too guilty of over-romanticizing the Groovy Old Days of the 60’s and early 70’s. As Billy Joel sang, “The good old days […]
