ABOUT THE HOST

CONFESSIONS OF A CLOSET CHRISTIAN

In Confessions of a Closet Christian, Jana Elizabeth Stambaugh explores Christianity from a 20-something perspective, relaying modern trends, discoveries, struggles, and pop culture references.

THE PODCAST
Confessions of a Closet Christian seeks to explore current issues facing today’s youth. In a world where Christianity can feel taboo, it’s hard to talk about faith. We’d rather tweet, Facebook, or Instagram our thoughts and it’s better if those thoughts share something about Justin Bieber – not Jesus. Confessions of a Closet Christian examines why we hide in today’s society and refrain from sharing our faith with this culture. It encourages us to share what we believe to be true – even when it’s socially awkward, uncool, and not trending on Twitter.

Confessions Of A Closet Christian 18: Why Do We Censor God?

When I hear the word “censor,” I think of the bleep sound I hear when someone swears on live TV.  Censoring serves its purposes. When I think about God, in my head – He’s the most important thing in my life.  But I’d rather only eat Fiber One cereal for a month than say that […]

Confessions Of A Closet Christian 17: Why Do We Think That the Gospel is Obvious?

Growing up I had what I’ll call an “of course” attitude.  “Of course” I got straight As.  “Of course” I was captain of the girls’ varsity soccer team.  “Of course” I was president of the senior class. I sound like a tightly wound goodie goodie.  I was.  But I worked hard for those things, so […]

Confessions Of A Closet Christian 16: How Do We Know God Exists?

When I hear the word “God,” I think of big things.  Vast space.  Endless time.  Omniscience and omnipotence.  I think of a booming thunderous voice.  Yes, I think of Morgan Freeman a little bit. I also think of a great mystery.  Who is God?  Does he even exist?  And if he does, why does he […]

Confessions of a Closet Christian 15: Why Do We Feel Entitled?

When I hear the word entitlement, I think of someone who through no fault of his own was born into luxury.  Like the King of France. Entitlement is defined in the dictionary as the fact of having a right to something. But when I think of who I am when I’m fighting traffic among hundreds […]

Confessions Of A Closet Christian 14: What Makes Us Narcissistic?

When I hear the word narcissist, I think of something other worldly and extreme – like the Greek myth that narcissism is derived from.  It’s easy to write narcissism off as something only ancient Greek youths wrestled with. When I’m taking communion on the first Sunday of the month, I’m distracted from what the definition […]

Confessions Of A Closet Christian 13: Why Do We Compare Ourselves To Others?

When I hear the word “compare,” I think of being lesser than, less cool and not measuring up.  It’s easy to compare ourselves to other people. Sometimes I think we all live fake realities.  We censor our lives through status updates and Instagram filters and then we compare our real lives with everyone else’s fake […]

Confessions Of A Closet Christian 12: Why Do We Worry?

I think I follow a bit of a God pattern.  Here’s what it looks like: I work myself up into a tizzy.  This is usually very melodramatic as no one has died, but rather plans – my plans – were changed. I freak out in my tizzy.  This usually happens at a speed of 0-60 […]

Confessions of a Closet Christian 11: Why Does God Feel Like A Product I Have To Sell?

When I invite someone to church, I get uncomfortable.  Most of the time, I don’t even really invite them.  I merely mention my church one too many times and they ask if they can come check it out. This has got to be the work of the Holy Spirit – because Lord knows it’s not […]

Confessions of a Closet Christian 10: How Can Good Things Become Idols?

When I hear the word, “idol”, I think of the Israelites worshipping a golden calf in the desert.  It’s hard to relate to a people bowing down before a hunk of metal in the shape of a bovine.  I’ve never once had the impulse to do this. As a child, I thought that so long […]

Confessions Of A Closet Christian 9: How Does God Use Us To Reach People?

Opportunities to show God’s goodness are all around us.  But, are our eyes open to see them? As my grandmother says, “We never know who we might effect with even a smile.”  You see, God is always at work through us, but we also need to be courageous enough to play our part instead of […]
