ABOUT THE HOST

CONFESSIONS OF A CLOSET CHRISTIAN

In Confessions of a Closet Christian, Jana Elizabeth Stambaugh explores Christianity from a 20-something perspective, relaying modern trends, discoveries, struggles, and pop culture references.

THE PODCAST
Confessions of a Closet Christian seeks to explore current issues facing today’s youth. In a world where Christianity can feel taboo, it’s hard to talk about faith. We’d rather tweet, Facebook, or Instagram our thoughts and it’s better if those thoughts share something about Justin Bieber – not Jesus. Confessions of a Closet Christian examines why we hide in today’s society and refrain from sharing our faith with this culture. It encourages us to share what we believe to be true – even when it’s socially awkward, uncool, and not trending on Twitter.

Confessions Of A Closet Christian 27: Why Is It Hard To See God & Why Do We Ignore What Is Right In Front Of Us?

On a recent trip to Israel, I found myself reluctant to even be there. This sounds both sensible and selfish. After all, Israel had just attacked Syria just before we left on our trip and Syria retaliated by targeting a tourist location within a day of our arrival. Still, complaining about going abroad sounds “snobby”, […]

Confessions of a Closet Christian 26: Who Are We To Judge?

When I hear the word “judge”, I think of a short-circuited party scene. You know, where everyone is dancing and having a good time until the mom comes in, turns off the music and everything stops prematurely. A fun time is ruined and everyone has to go home. That’s how I fell when I’m being […]

Confessions of a Closet Christian 25: What Makes A Story Good and Which Story Do We Prefer?

When I hear the word “story”, I think of something epic, adventurous and intriguing.  There’s battle, sport, magic, and romance.  There’s a beginning, middle and end and some sort of conflict. But when I hear the word “Bible”, all that comes to mind is a heavy brick of a book full of strict rules with […]

Confessions of a Closet Christian 24: Only Old People Attend Church

When I hear the word “church”, I think of little old ladies who bake delicious cookies and wear cardigans all year because they’re always cold.  Or I think of a glorified rock concert.  The worship team has sprung “Moves Like Jagger”, and they seem to be more focused about entertaining than glorifying God.  It’s silly.  […]

Confessions of A Closet Christian 23: Terrified to Evangelize

What does the word “evangelism” make me cringe?  And how is it that Atheists can help me tell my story? You see, when I hear the word “evangelize”, it makes me think of an overbearing street corner preacher.  You know, the guys shouting in the subway corners, jamming their fingers into their Bibles and shouting […]

Confessions of a Closet Christian 22: Proud Beliebers and Ashamed Believers

Why is it so easy to talk about celebrities yet so difficult to talk about Jesus? When I think about what a “Christian” is, my mind tends to gravitate toward a staunch republican with white hair and white skin.  He’s probably arguing about abortion or something. But when I think of Jesus, I don’t’ think […]

Confessions of a Closet Christian 21: Why Do We Focus On First World Problems?

I just ate a macaroon that I thought had vanilla filling, but it was lemon. #firstworldproblems Hand wash only.  #firstworldproblems My customized MacBook Pro hasn’t shipped yet.  #firstworldproblems This hashtag is hilarious.  It’s witty.  It’s clever.  It’s true.  These are silly things.  Miniscule surface things that in the grand scheme don’t matter.  But they matter […]

Confessions of a Closet Christian 20: Is There More to Thanksgiving than Turkey?

When I hear the word “Thanksgiving,” of course I think of turkey and mashed potatoes.  Maybe a little Black Friday shopping.  Maybe some pilgrims and some corn.  It’s easy to associate the holiday with football games and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.  I even think of the National Dog Show sponsored by Purina that my family […]

Confessions Of A Closet Christian 19: Why Waiting Is The Worst

When I hear the word “wait,” I think of something terrible – like sitting in a dentist’s office or the DMV.  Waiting is the worst. Most of us are conditioned to avoid waiting at all costs.  I have trouble waiting for my email to load and my Instagram to refresh. Most of us try to […]
